Je crois que je viens de rencontrer le pire personnage secondaire tous romans confondus.

Anne, la meilleure amie de l’héroïne, est juste INSUPPORTABLE ! J’avais de lui faire bouffer ses chaussures qui ne font pas de bruit !!! Je n’ai jamais lu ni vu une amitié (mais peut-on vraiment appeler cela de l’amitié ?) aussi naze, pourrie, à la limite du toxique. Je pense que cette relation Naomi/Anne a gâché une bonne partie de ma lecture. La fille est invasive, intrusive, sans respect pour l’opinion, le consentement ou la sensibilité de son amie. J’ai trouvé ça juste horrible, je me suis sentie vraiment mal, d’autant plus que toute l’histoire aurait pu se dérouler de la même façon sans que Anne soit une telle fouineuse ! (Et en plus, c’est le prénom de ma soeur, vraiment non, je ne pouvais pas accepter une telle injustice pour les Anne de ce monde). 

Si on met ce perso de côté, on peut passer à l’histoire.

J’ai aimé les échanges de lettres, vraiment ça a donné tout le sel à cette histoire, c’était le truc vraiment mignon et ça l’est resté jusqu’au bout ! J’ai eu une correspondante quand j’étais au collège, Laura, elle vivait en Espagne ! On a échangé quelques temps, et puis ça s’est arrêté, mais c’est drôle parce que j’avais retrouvé ses lettres il y a quelques temps, donc cette lecture m’a rappelé de bons souvenirs ! 

On devrait revenir aux échanges épistolaires, franchement c’est juste génial.

J’ai beaucoup aimé Naomi qui est un personnage adorable, à l’écoute, bienveillante, très douce et à laquelle on peut s’identifier.

J’ai beaucoup aimé Luca, aussi, je me suis rangée de son côté pas mal de fois, mais j’avoue que le quiproquo a peut-être été mal amené.

Beaucoup d’éléments de l’intrigue étaient aisément identifiables et faciles à deviner. Là aussi, j’ai trouvé que certaines choses étaient faciles et trop commodes, tout comme d’autres ne tenaient vraiment qu’à un fil. Il y a de vraies fragilités dans l’intrigue et le déroulé de l’histoire et on tique un peu sur la crédibilité, mais je dirais qu’on peut l’accepter et glisser dessus dans le cadre d’une comédie romantique. Je ne dis pas qu’écrire cette histoire était facile, je dis que certains raccourcis sont tolérables, mais pour moi j’ai remis en cause trop de choses pour vraiment m’immerger. 

Si la première moitié est un peu lente en termes de narration, d’action, de trame, la seconde moitié est un page turner, on est tenus par un fil tendu jusqu’au bout même si on a tout deviné depuis longtemps, on envie que les personnages se rendent à l’évidence.

La plume n’a pas été assez fluide pour moi par moments, beaucoup de choses inutiles dans la narration, et cette façon de détailler chaque action étape après étape que je retrouve très souvent dans mes dernières lectures et qui alourdissent vraiment la lecture et nuisent au rythme. 

En résumé, une jolie histoire avec cette base de relation épistolaire absolument adorable !!!!, une amitié vraiment pas saines, deux héros tout à fait mignons. Un agréable moment malgré quelques longueurs au début.

I think I just met the worst supporting character in the history of novels.

Anne, the heroine’s best friend, is just UNBEARABLE! I wanted to make her eat her silent shoes!!! I’ve never read about or seen a friendship (but can you really call it friendship?) this lame, rotten, and borderline toxic. I think this Naomi/Anne dynamic ruined a good part of my reading experience. The girl is invasive, intrusive, and has no respect for her friend’s opinion, consent, or feelings. I found it just awful; it made me feel really bad, especially since the whole story could have unfolded the same way without Anne being such a nosy busybody! (And on top of that, it’s my sister’s name—seriously, no, I couldn’t accept such an injustice for all the Annes in the world). 

If we set this character aside, we can move on to the story.

I loved the letter exchanges—they really added a special touch to this story. It was such a sweet part of it, and it stayed that way right until the end! I had a pen pal when I was in middle school—her name was Laura, and she lived in Spain! We wrote back and forth for a while, and then it stopped, but it’s funny because I found her letters again a while back, so reading this brought back some great memories! 

We should bring back pen-pals—honestly, it’s just awesome.

I really liked Naomi—she’s such a lovely character: attentive, kind, very gentle, and someone you can really relate to.

I really liked Luca, too; I found myself siding with him quite a few times, but I’ll admit that the misunderstanding might have been handled a bit clumsily.

A lot of the plot points were easy to spot and predict. Here, too, I found that some things were too easy and convenient, while others really hung by a thread. There are real weaknesses in the plot and the story’s progression, and the credibility is a bit questionable, but I’d say you can accept it and overlook it within the context of a romantic comedy. I’m not saying that writing this story was easy; I’m saying that some shortcuts are tolerable, but for me, I questioned too many things to really immerse myself in it. 

While the first half is a bit slow in terms of storytelling, action, and plot, the second half is a page-turner; you’re kept on the edge of your seat until the very end, even if you’ve figured everything out long ago—you just want the characters to face the facts.

The writing wasn’t quite fluid enough for me at times; there were a lot of unnecessary details in the narrative, and that tendency to describe every action step by step—which I’ve encountered so often in my recent reads—really weighs down the reading experience and disrupts the pacing. 

In short, a lovely story with this absolutely adorable epistolary relationship as its foundation!!!!, a truly unhealthy friendship, and two utterly charming protagonists. An enjoyable read despite a few slow parts at the beginning.
