I bought this book on a whim, partly because the cover intrigued me, and partly to help me cope with the heat wave.
So Iâll tell you right off the bat: this book is absolutely not recommended during a heat wave because the story will make you feel hot in every sense of the word.
The male lead, Callahan, is a firefighterâbut one who specializes in managing, controlling, and extinguishing fires. The firefighter with a big hose⊠a fire hose, of course (but heâs equipped with the other kind as well, in case you were wondering). I just had to make that one and sell you on the whole thing.
Callahan is a man who has been betrayed and has also experienced trauma, so heâs distrustful and keeps his guard up.
As for Scottie, the female lead, sheâs a paramedic by profession and arrives in Sky Ridge to escape her past (Iâm keeping this vague to avoid spoilers). She just wants to work, keep a low profile, and fit in as best she can in this small town. Sheâs looking for a fresh start.
Iâm tempted to say that when these two meet, sparks will fly, but youâll just roll your eyes. Oops, I said itâtoo late. Sorry.
The two characters the author introduces live up to all their promises.
The story is gripping, well-constructed, and well-paced, with a âclosed-doorâ section that could have been risky but, on the contrary, added a very special touch because itâs during this period that a lot is said and revealed.
The emotions are superbly described, especially the parts dealing with trauma.
I loved the writing style; I found the pacing to be excellent. The only downside, perhaps, are the misunderstandingsâI really donât like them, and in my opinion (and this is just my personal view), they felt contrived and unnecessary.
The steamy scenes are really, really well doneâneither too much nor too little, and never over the top. There are a few of them, and since I had something to compare them to in the book I read next, I can confirm that theyâre high-quality and well-balanced.
Other than that, I had a great time reading it, and I canât wait to discover the other two books in this series, all by different authors
