First and foremost, let me address the issue: the translation is really not great. Iâd heard that this was Junoâs weak point, and itâs been confirmed. You can clearly tell itâs a literal translation, word-for-word at times, and itâs jarring because certain American or English expressions simply canât be translated literally; they need to be rendered with an equivalent. So the editorial work is disappointing.
I havenât read many biker romances, but Iâve read a few, and I didnât enjoy this story as much as I thought I would.
I enjoyed the beginning of the story, and I really liked Brinleyâs characterâexcept that as the story progressed, Brinley was no longer at all what the author had promised us; she was no longer true to the portrait or image we had formed of her when we started the novel. I was rather disappointed by Brinleyâs attitude whenever she was around Wolfeâthough perhaps, or even certainly, that was what the author intended, and Iâm not questioning that, but it didnât sit well with me.
Wolfe, on the other hand, follows a very consistent and logical course of action, remaining true to himself from start to finish. However, his character development is notable, so of the two, heâs the more successful character (in my very personal opinion).
The storyâs weak point is that s3x takes precedence over the plotâIâd say itâs about a 70/30 split, which gives you an idea of just how pervasive it is. And honestly, I donât mind the smut at all as long as itâs well-written and justified, but here it was just s3x for s3xâs sakeânot to mention that Wolfe lacks a bit of imagination; itâs always the same moves, the same words, aside from two or three geographical variationsânothing transcendent. If the first three steamy scenes get you a little worked up, it quickly dies down afterward until youâre left indifferent (at least, thatâs how it was for me).
I found the storyâs pacing very uneven, with very predictable plot twists.
Iâm a bit disappointed with this readâit wonât be memorable.
