I really enjoyed this novel, which has just the right amount of spooky, autumnal atmosphere – perfect for Halloween – and takes great delight in giving you the creeps.

It’s a loose reworking – or at least loosely inspired by – the Brothers Grimm’s tale *The Ball of the Twelve Princesses*, which I’m sure I read a very long time ago, but which I have absolutely no memory of, even though, whilst reading this novel, I felt as though I recognised bits of it.

The plot is so gripping that you find it hard to put the book down, and when you have to stop, you can’t wait to pick it up again. The final revelations are astonishing, and the author has succeeded in sowing doubt, both in the minds of her characters and in those of the readers.

I absolutely loved the character of Annaleigh, through whose eyes we experience the whole story, all the adventures, all the intrigues, and the entire investigation. We suffer alongside her, having lost four of her sisters. There were twelve of them; now there are only eight left, and I found the description of her feelings very accurate, very powerful and deeply moving. Accompanying her throughout the novel, through her suffering and the mysteries she seeks to unravel, is truly the highlight of this book. I also really liked the character of Cassius, whom she meets at the start of the novel and who gradually takes on greater importance. I really appreciated the gentleness of that character and Annaleigh’s sensitivity.

I’m glad I chose this book from my TBR pile. I think it fits in well with the season, the month of October and the approach of Halloween. I think it’s the perfect book for an evening on 31 October, by candlelight, in front of a log fire or, if, like me, you have neither, with the sound of a crackling fire playing in the background on YouTube or a music app.

So it was an excellent read – not a favourite, perhaps, as there are a few slow bits here and there – but I had a brilliant time and couldn’t put it down.
